All About the Lion

Known for its majesty and nicknamed the "King of the Jungle" as found in our Lion Song, the lion is both beautiful and strong. Lions usually have yellow and brown coats. Older male lions have big manes around their necks that protect them when fighting other males.

Here are some interesting facts about the Lion:

• Lions are found in Africa and northern India. There are only about 21,000 lions left in Africa.
  
• Adult Lions are about 4 feet tall, 5-8 feet long and weigh up to 500 pounds.
  
• They usually live around 13 years in the wild.
• Lions can run up to 50 miles per hour and can jump over 30 feet.
• Their roar can be heard up to 5 miles away and they have excellent hearing.
  
• Lions live and hunt in "prides" or large groups of about 15 lions.
• Lions eat a variety of meat that they catch.
• Female lions do most of the hunting.
• Lions are mostly nocturnal, meaning they sleep during the day and hunt at night.

About the Lion Song

Since the lion primarily lives in Africa and has a reputation for being the "King of the Jungle", We tried to incorporate those two elements as the main building blocks of our song. We experimented with some traditional African rhythms and syncopation until the song had both a majestic as well as an African feel. The lyrics were built from the lion "fact sheet" we put together.

We feel combining all these elements into one makes a truly fun and educational experience.
